A rule that adds days rather than moving them
Twelve days are public holidays under the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994, and the Act adds one further sentence: whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday following is also a public holiday. Also, not instead. The Sunday keeps its standing and the Monday gains one.
There is no matching Saturday rule. A public holiday that lands on a Saturday remains a Saturday and produces nothing extra. That asymmetry is where printed calendars go wrong most often, and it is the reason a marked sheet says more than a list of dates.
The sheet opens on 2026, where National Women’s Day is a Sunday, 9 August, so Monday 10 August is marked with it. Four months carry no public holiday that year: February, July, October and November. The year control also holds 2027 and 2028, which land the same twelve dates on different weekdays.
A public holiday can be moved or added by proclamation. The sheet carries the statutory pattern rather than any such announcement, and it is the national list rather than a statement of what a workplace closes for or pays for.
Printing it
A4 is 210 × 297 mm and Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches. The PDF carries a real page box, so print at 100% rather than fit to page and the sheet comes out the size it says. A5, A3, portrait or landscape, week starting Sunday or Monday, ruled lines optional.
Marks are black rather than coloured, because most of these sheets are printed in mono. Twelve months to a page has no room for names, so it marks without labelling; one month to a page prints the names under the grid.
The other country on the control
The holiday control carries South Africa, the United States, or nothing. Both lists rest on a statute that states its own weekend rule in writing, which is what makes them computable. Countries whose holidays are not fixed by such a rule are not on the control, and the site does not guess at them.
