The month that follows a long one

Within a year, August is the only one of the seven 31-day months that comes straight after another. July has 31 and so does August. March, May, July, October and December each follow a shorter month, and January opens the year with nothing in front of it. That gives the third quarter a front-heavy shape: 31, 31, then 30.

In 2026 August is the widest sheet of the twelve: it begins on a Saturday and ends on a Monday, and six rows are needed on a Sunday start and six on a Monday start, which makes it the only month of that year that cannot be drawn in five either way. Ten of its days fall at the weekend, level with May, and 21 are working days.

Six rows on a single page means each box loses depth. If the sheet is meant for writing in, landscape or a step up to A3 buys the space back; if it is going on a wall to be read from across a room, six rows read clearly enough at that distance.

Printing it

A3 is 297 × 420 mm, exactly twice the area of A4’s 210 × 297 mm, and it is the honest answer to a six-row month that has to hold handwriting. A5, at 148 × 210 mm, goes the other way and is better suited to the five-row months.

Print at 100% rather than fit to page, and check the caption under the sheet before you pull the file: it names the paper, the turn and the finished size in millimetres.
